got back from lake this weekend and noticed cover was gone from the bearing. could something have fallen out while it was off. the wheel seemed to be unsteady and wobbly when i backed it into the yard. don't want the wheel to go flying off. anyone have any input. this is a 1980's model trailor by the way.

Sounds like your bearings are failing. The wheel should have fallen off by now. It shook off the cover. At minimum, you need bearings and seals. Maybe the spindle is shot by now.

Wheel bearing inspection and repacking is a relatively frequent maintenance item. You see a lot of breakdown maintenance along the roadside because it isn't done timely. It gets expensive that way, usually involving a strange welding shop and a tow truck.

hope it helps
