I'm going to buy a Ranger Tug R27 in the next 3-12 months. To be ready for when I find the right boat and deal, I'm selling my 2011 Silverado 1/2 ton and buying a 3/4 ton diesel. A colleague has a 2014 F-250 Lariet 4-door with 65,000 miles that he may sell. I intend to tow the R27 on trips that may be as long as 600-2,000 miles. It will not be a daily driver. On the trailer, an R27 weighs 10-11,000 pounds. For this type of mission, is this a viable vehicle?

Those Ranger Tugs are neat.
Have been looking at Ford's when I need my next truck but while looking I've come across threads and real life problems. There is a recent thread on OSO which were discussing issues found with them and the inability to get it fixed. My buddy has one which just up and died without warning on the road and it was a sender in the exhaust that went bad.

So far as the tow capacity its from 15900 to16400 so it should have no issue pulling so long as its equipped correctly.

Acording to specs a regular cab 4x2 or 4x4 diesel 2014 F-250 is rated at 12,000 lbs towing capacity. While the super cab and crew cab mode ls are rated at 14,000 lbs towing capacity. With the right options that capacity could be more. The fith wheel towing for all of the above models is in the 16,300-16,800 range.

With fuel, gear, and people you may be close to the towing limits.:noidea:

One problem you're going to run into is the hitch. The truck itself is more than capable of pulling the load, however, the class IV hitch is only rated at 600/6000 pounds unless you use a weight distribution hitch, which gives you 1200/12500 pounds.
The solution is to ensure you have a class V hitch. I installed a Curt XD+ on my truck which is rated for 2550 pounds tongue weight and 17000 pounds gross trailer weight - $260.00.
Another problem is that this year truck will squat badly under a light load. Nothing wrong with it, it's just the way it is, mine does it and I have the beefiest suspension available. The solution was to install airbags. I installed Air Lift Loadlifter 5000 Ultimate airbags for $350.00.
The 6.7L PSD is an outstanding engine with virtually no common issues, especially for the 2014 model year. Previous years did use ceramic bearings in the turbo, but those were replaced in 2013 with stainless steel bearings.

BTW, mine is a 2012 6.2L Lariat Crew Cab 4x4 FX4. Best truck I ever owned.
