You don't need to drag the trailer to MVA.
You'll need the title signed over to you or a notorized billl of sale. You'll also need an inspection certificate if the trailer is rated #3000 or more.
Go to local MVA branch with your paperwork and pay the 6% sales tax.
The worst that can happen is the VIN is missing. Then you have to apply for a new VIN/ home made trailer ID plate. They give you a new VIN plate to attach to the trailer
