You find some interesting things in data sheets and warranty documentation.

Per Seasense marine accessories / Unifed marine inc. winch straps and tie downs have a 5 year life expectancy.

Three times the life expectancy as determined by the manufacturer can't be good

Thanks Dingbat for the additional information....maybe I'll just spring the $10 for a new strap!.....

I consider this something needed for safety of everyone on the road around you.

Buy a new strap.

Costs $10 and takes 10 min. Surely this is worth a life.
I had one break half way up once. Tied a knot and it broke half way up from there again (not the knot, another part of the strap - this time the part that was not sun faded). Had a cable break once right at the point it was attached to the hook. It was a new cable and it broke the first use. I inpsect things like that regularly. In both cases there was no visual indication of any potential problem.

Its no fun to have one break. In fact a real PITA. If I couldn't afford 10 bucks for a new one I'd park the boat and watch TV.
