gp760 on premix

I have a 97 Yamaha GP760 that I am getting ready for the season.. Going to do a carb job and install a primer kit. I am also consider switching it to premix. In order to get to the lake I have to travel about a 1/2 mile on a river at pretty close to closed idle. Everything on the oil injection works fine but I am wondering if i can reduce the toxic cloud by going premix. It smokes a lot when idling down the river. Would changing to premix reduce the smoke?

All things being equal, changing to premix would increase the amount of smoke, if anything.
