The prop on my 20hp Mercury Outboard has begun slipping. It works fine while scooting around close to the dock in no-wake zones but once you try to rev the engine and take off it feels like the prop is slipping and won't push the boat forward while the engine revs high.

Any ideas as to why this is happening and any solutions? If anyone could also point me in the right direction where I could get parts for this old of motor that would be extremely helpful!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 1972 20hp Prop Slip

The hub of the prop supposed to slip if you strike something. with age and too many strikes it often begins to slip unexpectedly.
I f it is a splined prop I think one size is available here at iboats. 11" pitch.
While You may be able to have a new hub pressed in I think you would be better off with a new prop.
Belive it or not props do
wear with age even to the point the diameter may be slightly undersized.
Parts may be available at your merc dealer, here at iboats or ebay or your local craigs list.
also www.aomci.org.
