Re: SS prop worth the effort?

Pros
Stiffer material, blades can be thinner, and with cast different contours for better Performance, or left as thick and be much stronger(this can be good or bad) than an identical Al prop
Has better wear resistance in soft mud and sand bottoms

Cons
Heavier, can place addition strain on shift mechanism.
On hard impacts the blades don't shatter/brake as easily, so instead of absorbing/dissipating the stress of the impact at the blade it transfers it to the propshaft, often bending it, and/or onto the gears in the gear case.

Re: SS prop worth the effort?

According to the prop makers, SS is like 5 times stronger that aluminum, so it stands to reason that the SS prop would last a lot longer given the normal wear and tear most folks subject a prop to.

The performance advantage depends on what kind of boat you have and what type of prop you run.

For example, switching from your average aluminum prop to an SST(in your case) might yield a moderate performance advantage, while being much more resistant to damage from the usual mud, sand, sticks, and other junk that seems to tear up aluminum props.

You have to decide whether the higher price is worth it.
