Can some one help me pick out a prop and pitch for my 87 Blackmax 150 HP. I'm looking for speed, NOT torque. Currently running a Quick Silver Laser 2 prop with a 27 pitch. Any help is much appreciated.

The prop attaches to the motor.------But the prop " fits the boat and load "----There is no mention of the boat here.---There is no mention of the RPM that you are now running.------------Not much help can be given without more information.

If you can turn a 27p at OEM suggested rpm you got a stronggggg motor

Re: 1987 Mercury Black Max Prop?

It depends on a lot of stuff like hull, weight, what the bottom of the boat is configured like, prop type etc. Ive got a 25 pitch laser 2 and for my hull its a hunk of crap. Slips 18% and doesnt handle corners worth a damn unless I drop it 5 inches under the pad. I can barely get 73 MPH out of it. With a 26 pitch big eared chopper on the same boat and motor I'm going 84 MPH with 5% slip at 6800. Thats only because I can raise the motor up so the prop centerline is over the pad by an inch. To do that you need a low water pickup. If you are pushing a 27 pitch Laser 2 over 6000 RPM with a 150 and the boat is bigger than a bathtub and you arent going 80+ MPH I'd starting looking at your setup and prop choice. If you dont have the speed you want its probably because you are just lugging that motor and not getting into its prime RPM range which is going to be 5500-5800 at the most unless youve done some work to it.

The 17ft Bullet I sold had a tweeked 200hp, 6 inch reversed jackplate, 2 inches above pad, stock lower with upper holes pluged, Hoss Triton 14.5X28 merc labbed,18 gallon fuel 3 batterys, trolling motor, hull was balsa core built for drag. Turn 6200rpm loaded and 6600 1 man.. best I seen out of gps was 82.4 mph

Its all a guessing game until we figure out what boat he has and how fast he's turning the boat and the motor.

Your way overpropped for that hull and a 2.0L mota. With a jack plate and set up correctly you should be running about a 24 pitch prop and best you will see out of this set-up is low 60's. The dealership I worked for years ago sold these and these are not a performance hulls specifically if its a F/S as windshield act as elevators and holds front of boat down.

What do you mean by a 2.0 mota?

Re: 1987 Mercury Black Max Prop?

Ok, I have tried to do a little research and this is what I found out...

Boat: 86 ProCraft 1750v
Motor: 85 Mercury Black Max XR2 150 RPM WOT Range 5500-6000
Prop: QuickSilver Laser 2
EB quick silver 48 16552 a41 27p

That is the information I have, can anyone help me out? Just looking for the lease stressful prop for my boat. Trying to not put any stress on my transom. Maybe gain a little speed. Thank you for any help possible.

27” is a serious pitch for any 2.0 that’s standard I’d think. I know some that will turn a 25” laser 2 well into the 60’s on a special and fast hull, but 27” is on the edge of its ability unless it’s friek of a thing.
