I have a 1964 18hp outboard johnson. When it runs it runs good, but now every once in a while when I have it in gear the prop won't spin forward or backwards. When I shut it off put it in neutral and turn the prob it will make it go into gear again. It never pops of of gear when running just after setting for a few min's. Does this mean to adjust the shift linkage?

thanks

I think your correct on adjusting the shift linkage.

I don't think the connector behind the oval window can slip the connector bolts pass through a recess in the rods if the bolt fell out
it wouldn't shift anymore. There is a shift adjustment near the shift handle. In neutral be sure the prop turns freely.
The forward and reverse gears should be even on either side of neutral.
I think there are also 2 detent balls in the gear case that help the clutch dog to stay where selected.
These are often lost by the unwary. I think 2 balls with a spring between them positioned in prop shaft inside the clutch dog.
