I believe the 68,65 came with a 10 X 9 1/4.Optional were 9 1/4 X 10,10 X 11,10 X 12,10 1/4 X 10.Of course these would be selected for the application.

thank so much, not a lot of choice. I just swapped out a 50 hp for this 65 and find the take off on the 50 was faster, it was a 1972 2 cyl

The 10 X 11 is is only one size smaller than the 10 X 12 the highest pitch.
What was the pitch on the 50? The 65 ha a 1.70:1 The 50 I believe is a 2.42:1 This would probably give the 50 a little edge out of the hole

Prop calculator says that at 5000 with a 12" prop the 65 will do a little over 30.
The brochure does claim a max speed of 36.The 72 claims speeds to 38.
The 50 with @ 6000 with a 17" prop (the 2.42 ratio will turn a higher pitch and a 17" is pretty typical)
Speed is about 36.
Whether either motor could make their max rpm with the size props I quoted would depend on the boat and a healthy motor.

Re: !968 65 hp Johnson prop Question

I dropped the 50 because it was an ESL and a friend told me they had a reputation for blowing the top, plus the solenoids in the lower unit and that switch in the control box all added to my decision. Bought the 50 for$250 sold for $400, bought the 65 for $500. I thought that I'd get more uummph! out of the 65 for pulling a tube with my" larger Daughters". Hey thanks for the knowledge your pretty wise on this subject.

You're probably better off without the "electric" shift but if the 65 has the magneto distributor parts may be scarce.
The V4s are said to have good low end grunt. You may want to check the compression. At least 100psi.
If compression is low sometimes a decarb treatment with something like Sea Foam helps free the rings.
Be sure the throttle opens all the way. Antivent plate about even with the bottom of the transom.
To evaluate your setup you need a tach and a gps to get us the wot rpm and speed.
