Late 70's Early 80"s Mercury 40 hp Rocket

I recently purchased a 1985 16 ft. Larsen. It has a 40 hp Mercury. I am trying to find the serial number, for the motor, but the tag has been removed. I am new to boating and looking to purchase a manual for the motor. I need to learn how to change the lower unit oil and tune ups myself. Does anyone know of an alternate location where the serial number would be? Any help would be appreciated.

I'd hate to suggest it, but that's a good indication that it might be stolen.

Just google "Mercury outboard motor repair manual", and you'll see a page full of places that sell repair manuals that cover several years of Mercury motors of various HP.

There are also lots of u-tube videos of "how to" change lower unit oil, etc. Just google it.
