Mercury 1964 500 50 HP Prop question

I have a Mercury 500 1964 50 HP short shaft on a Mercury 430 HD Inflatable with steering console etc. Worked on Motor all winter, when you start to push more than half throttle, prop slips, hub seems fine with tests. Prop on now has this number: 48-38094-1, has a 12 on side so I assume it has a 12 pitch. I found a new Mich prop on e-bay number 030286 which I hope will be better. Props are hard to find for this motor as it is eleven spline. When slipping starts you can reduce throttle and it will be okay. Any thoughts? I was in back while wife drove and everything seemed okay but it wasn't! Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. I did check trans adjustments also.

Re: Mercury 1964 500 50 HP Prop question

I know how frustrating this can be!
I did some research on the Merc 500 I just got on my 1973 GW Invader and found out that I have a 1966 Merc 500. I dont have the slippage problem that you do but my prop is pretty well chunked up (got a new chunk out of it this weekend) and probably one of the reasons my WOT is only 4900)

Here was the thread that I started before..but no responses yet.

My problem is Motor will rev up to right RPM's but boat won't go with it!:D
I do all my own work and have gone through almost everything.
Thanks, Rick

Take prop off put a permanent line across the hub run the motor and check the line.If it still lines up you have a venting(cavitation) problem.Inflatables do have venting problems. Is it inflated to the correct prerssure. Is it rated for
that hp?You may be able to have the hub replaced at a prop shop.

Yes, I will check the keel also just to verify, I have two props I bought on e-bay coming to test. As eleven spline is hard to get. The prop that is on there now came with motor. Can Rubber look perfect and still slip? When viewing area when it happens nothing looks out of place in the water.
Thanks, Rick

I think usually there are telltale signs of a spun hub but I have seen those that looked normal.I guess you might as well wait and check with the new props.
