1995 Merc Alpha 1. The OEM manual recommends 2-4-c lube on the prop shaft before re-installing the prop. Is there an equivalent grease I can use from the Auto parts shop? I don't have a marine shop nearby to get the 2-4-c. I could order on-line but the shipping is more than the grease.

Thanks!

Like Bondo's sig,any grease is better than no grease;)

OMC Triple guard or the 2-4-C are considered waterproof grease.
Most auto parts marine grease is considered water resistant.
So far the best i have used is the Triple guard.

Re: Prop Shaft Grease

I prefer the OMC grease as well.
Lubriplate 1242, although not labeled as a specific water-proof grease stands up extremely well and I've used it on the prop-shaft quite a bit....depends on what I have with me when I'm testing props.

I use whatever waterproof grease I have around at the time.

Re: Prop Shaft Grease

I use the same Pennzoil marine grease that I use for everything. I remove my props every year and haven't had an issue. I suppose if you were going to leave your prop on for years at a time, you might want the truly waterproof grease. But considering you should remove them to check the propshaft seal every year... any grease is better than no grease at all.

Good point, TW...
It's a good practice to remove the prop, clean the shaft and re-grease every year when doing your normal lower unit maintenance.
