I have a Mercury Mariner 9.9 outboard from the mid 90's The Prop nut is a brass nylock nut. What is the torque specification for this nut?

Be sure the Nylock is fresh and take up the slack.
Not exactly by the book but has worked for 60 years.

Late 90s 9.9HP manual says 70 Lbs.Inches so not real tight, maybe about 6 Lbs on the end of a decent spanner.

Are there any problems using a steel or even stainless steel Nylock instead of Brass if I only operate in fresh water?

I guess that explains how I could take the old one off just using the socket and my fingers

As long as the Nylock is working as it should no problem.
Probably best with a higher grade a stainless (more nickel )Easy to check with a magnet.
Weak attraction to the magnet. Some stainless is almost as strong attraction as normal steel.
Probably just a cosmetic issue.
