Just wondering if this motor (1981 Mercury 50hp Thunderbolt Ignition 20" shaft) is ok for power on a 1997 Fisher Freedom 22' pontoon? If so, what would be ideal prop size for this engine?

Thanks.

50 is adequate for speeds about 18-20 mph.
Not great for water sports.
If it has a prop get us the size,(usually near the base of the blades or under the prop nut). and the wot rpm and gps speed.

That's the combo that I have on my 21' Toon that cruises at 22 mph gps with four on board. Then it drops down to about 16 mph with more kids added :D .

Don't know what pitch prop you'll need.

I'd be looking to put a larger motor on that size pontoon boat. And an engine that's a little newer would be preferred. Engines are not somewhere to get too thrifty.

I have a boat of that size, and it's got a Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke--quite a performer.

It all depends on what you want it to do...a trolling motor could be enough for some people on a small lake... for others 90 or 115 would be too slow...Much bigger probably would not gain much speed without modifications like strakes.
