I have a 1979 20 ft pontoon boat with a 70 hp Evinrude. If anybody has something like this what is your avg speed loaded with say four adults and couple ice chest on say a semi calm day. I am trying to see what mine should be getting as far as speed.

Re: Pontoon Boat speed Question

I have a 24 w/70 Yamaha 2 stroke and get exactly 20 mph per GPS with a smilar load.
I need to reprop it because it has a 13 x17 and only turns 4500 rpm.

Re: Pontoon Boat speed Question

Pontoon just don't go fast without ALOT of power which 70 isn't so 20 mph is pretty good, maybe less if you have smaller tubes and being a 79 it may have alot of lake junk on the tubes which will slow it down also.

What are you getting now?

I have a 20Ft. with 23inch tubes and a 75 H.P Mercury, and with 5-7 people on board my max speed per GPS is 23.9 mph so far.

Re: Pontoon Boat speed Question

Hey trout74 what pitch prop do you have ?

My prop is a 13" pitch, at full throttle with 5-7 people my RPM's are 5500, I also have a 11" pitch and with the same load and I get very close to same top speed at 6000-6100 RPM's. So I like the 5500 RPM's, loaded better.

Re: Pontoon Boat speed Question

The easiest way to detect a spun prop is to draw a line goes across the prop and the hub. Put the boat in the water, start it up and run around a little reving it to get the condition you described. Shut her down and inspect the prop. If the line still runs across the prop and hub the same as it started, probobly not spun. If the line does not line up it's spun.

Don't know how to tell with prop removed!
