I am considering purchasing a used 18 foot pontoon with a 40 HP gas engine, the problem is I live on a lake that prohibits gas engines so I will need to purchase an electric engine, I need to know what size I should purchase, I believe the pontoon seats 6 and adults will be the primary users. Also is it difficult to wire the electric engine so I can steer, etc???? Thanks for and assistance. :)

You would wnat a Torqueedo, it is an electric outboard, I have seen one in the box but never on a boat but I would imagine they make it pretty easy to get it hooked up and running.

As far as I know that is really your only option.

here is a video of the Torqueedo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0utXxauZOso.

i have never seen one, battery looks a little small.

i think i would go with a bow mounted, wireless controlled trolling motor. i have the WP 45 on my 20 footer, but if it is the only power i would want the WP 75.

I have a 55# Minnkota Power Drive V2 on the front of my 18 footer and it works very well. I suspect you are on a fairly small body of water so perhaps a couple of large capacity deep cycle batteries would work ok to get you around the lake. However, if you are on a bigger body of water, electric power is going to be an issue. Check with others on the lake and see what they are using.
