I always watch these videos at the beginning of every cold water season to remind myself of what to expect and what will happen should I fall my dumb butt overboard in cold water.

We don't get much ice here, but I still like to watch this one.

I like this one because it shows the benefits of a floatation suit in cold water.

I wear a floatation suit when fishing/boating over cold water (in my avatar), and even if the air temp is too warm to wear it I wear a regular PFD instead and have the suit in the boat to change into to warm up with should I ever take a cold swim.

Re: Cold Water Immersion and Survival

thanks for the links jng. good info to keep in mind...
for me, i don't go out on the lake in these cold temps where there's ice around. but i do boat in water that's pretty cold at begging and end of season. looks like i've been doing pretty much the right thing. i wear my pfd. of the boats i see at the lake at this time of year, many don't have a pfd on. imho, they could be bummed out if things go awry. that cold water is nothing to be messing with.
early this year two fellas fishing on my local watering hole ended up in the water (ice still on the lake). their o/b blew up. neither wearing pfds. the survivor stayed with the boat and even used the heat of the fire to help keep him warmer. the other fella tried to swim to shore. and they weren't to far from shore either. the news reported the survivor lost contact with the fella swimming to shore within minutes of entering the water. he'd gone down (rip)... :( very scary stuff..

'Great post, Jigngrub. I wish I saw it earlier. I'm going to add another resource here that I always share with the commercial mariners I work with. It's a video from the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, under the CDC. The video is called Man Overboard - Prevention and Recovery. It offers lots of valuable insights. In the past, the CDC gave out disks of the video for free, but it looks like they now offer the video in streaming form. Whatever the format, it covers lots of ground and does it briefly and effectively.
