finally got the HIN - STM11610m76k

boat is now full registered and ready to rock. i had floated it at the marina and couldn't get a spray then either.

i'd love to know what manual to order, if someone could help me pick that out? i'll get the ID off the motor tonite if i can find it.

Also, my motor has these catches that grab the bracket at the transom, setting the angle of the prop relative to the boat. those catches are stuck. Had to slide the pin they rest on out to get the motor raised for transport. The link goes down into the lower gear box, and i have no clue how to actuate it from there...

They aren't stuck most likely.... Put the motor in forward gear and I bet they will be released.

thanks! they're loose again - had to put it in reverse then forward again to get them to come loose :)

Still not much clue what manual to buy - where is the id number on the motor itself?

Mercury puts their serial numbers on the swivel bracket, look under the power head where the motor clamps to the boat,

http://www.marineparts. com/partspages/techhelp/tech3.htm

take the two extra spaces out of the URL after the (dot)

As far as the manual, here is what Iboats carry:

http://www.iboats.com/Mercury-Outboard-Manuals-Marine-Repair-Service/dm/view_id.251024

Just pick the one that matches your motor.

yeah that tag is long since gone :) i've seen references to it elsewhere but if its not stamped into the metal it doesn't exist

Actually on your motor it should have been a metal plate that was riveted to the swivel bracket.

i found a label on the transom bracket itself, but on the bracket that the motor is attached to, which is where it pivots for steering, there is no plate, front or back, of that part. I will take good pictures of it tonite so that i can show you where i'm looking at least.

I'm not seeing a lot of variety in options for the book, seems like the one book covers all the 500s? if thats the case i'd love to get it ordered so i can start to tear into the lower and see what the heck is going on there.

As I said above, find a used lower...the tools to set up the gear clearances in the lower will cost more than the lower unit.... Parts are also quite pricey....

I'm all for DIY but internal work in the lower unit just isn't a DIY project.

even just replacing the impellor?

meanwhile, here's some shots to try to ID this bad boy. i'm not opposed to replacing hte lower but if i can get it functional for the rest of hte summer for the cost of a impellor kit i can't hardly say no :D

Personally, I would just pick up a lower unit, swap them out and go fishing..

By the way, your serial number is in your third picture, I can't see a couple of the numbers but if you post it on here, we can figure out what year it is.

No Title

working on the boat. need folks to take a look:

specifically, the one of hte lower looking a the pump bottom. oily water. i just drained the gearbox and it was perfectly fine oil. the exhaust might have been frothing the water a little bit. i did find a bit of oily-ness on the exhust tube itself. if oil and water mixed there, the oil being waste from the burning of oil rich two stroke, ... am i guessing or actually remotely right here guys? i don't want to button this back up without knowoing first.

If theres a problem below this pump body, how the **** do i get it to lift. the book says remove the flush plug and just pull up, she's not moving.

This, a few wires soldered onthe trailer, and i'm in the water. sooo close :D
