1980's Mercury 4.5 stops streaming water....

I am having difficulty getting my early 80's 4.5 mercury running right. I have replaced everything the engine needed to run correctly, and replaced the impeller after finding that the old one tore apart, and now I get a weak water stream that slows down and then cuts out after it runs for a little while

Has anyone encountered something like this before?
If so what was the problem/solution?
any and al help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like impeller pieces may be blocking the cooling system.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... I agree,.... Drop the lower unit, 'n back-flush from the t-stat housin', the in-comin' water line,....

Hopefully, you'll find All the missin' pieces of the old impeller,....

4.3l, maybe,..?? no 4.5ls,....
