Is 10hp engine enough?

Hi All,

Looking to buy a 2011 9.9 hp mercury 4 stroke long shaft outboard. It would go on a 16’ aluminum fishing boat with built in live tank and benches.

Would this be enough power to get 3 people around the lake at a decent clip?

Thanks,

Ivan

I had a 9.8 on the rear of my 14 footer and had to change it out for an 18 so I could get up on plane with 3 people in the boat.

if by decent clip, you mean a few MPH, then yes. a 9.9 will not get the boat on plane with 3 people in it.

9.9 will not plane the boat, max speed about 6 mph.
20 hp MIGHT plane it with 3 people.

Start looking for 25 or 35 hp motors.

Depending on the water you'll run it in, it could do what you want it to do. NO it won't plane the boat, but maybe you just want to casually move around the lake. So it really depends on what you want form the engine. Just remember, the larger the engine the heavier it is. So if this is not a trailered setup, it will be more weight to man-handle every time.
