I have a merc 400 super thunderbolt (full jeweled) that has very little wear on it and was stored many years. I started it first pull since had weak battery and I could see why people like these by the sound. Seemed to run like new. Would like to know the years these were made since merc dealers couldn't seem to find my engine by ser. number so I will post pic when get a chance.

The Merc info here should help you ID the motor, not sure what fully jeweled means, most vintage mercs had similar chrome trim and silver face plates.

If the link is broken, google:

store old mercs

There's an ID tab on the top left of the page.

The 4-cylinder Merc 400s were built 1960 & 61, serial numbers 1279685 thru 1397580. It was a 44-cube powerhead, putting out 45 ponies. Shared much of its geometry with other 4-cylinder 40 & 44 cube models from 1955 to about 1963. Many consumable parts are still available, carb kits, water pumps, distributer belts, seals, etc. Even though your motor runs, it can be assumed that to be returned to regular service it will need some basic tune-up stuff to be a reliable runner. With controls, it might bring $200-$400 at a swap meet in my area. With basic tune-up stuff done, it might get what Mr 88 quoted.
