The story I got was that it was an ore boat running between the US and Canada and on one southerly excursion she encountered of all things a Rogue Wave on the Great Lakes of all things and that did her in.

Mark, yup a rogue wave and things went bad from there. The big lake here can bite ya fast. The fitzgerald was the largest on the lakes at the time,I knew people on the ship. One friend was supposed to be on it but missed the boat as his car broke down,so they took someone else. Even here in the bay and around the islands people get in trouble fast. We lose a couple a year in this area.

We're in Marblehead. I don't recall hearing about losing anyone this year....unusual.
