I'd say rust, too, but phase seperation can be dark and streaked. Anyway, once you dump the filter, replace it; don't put it back on. They don't work that way.

I'm going to buck the trend and disagree with it being "rust". If looks more like the liner out of your fuel line.

How old are your full lines?

Very well could be. Ethanol has a tendency to kill them by destroying the inner liner.

How long has it been since you changed that filter? I would take a good close look at the fuel lines and step up the frequency of filter changes to see if you keep getting debris.

Also, water in the bottom of the filter will cause the filter itself to rust.

What is your fuel tank made out of?

How does it react to a magnet?

really wish i had thought of this. my biggest fear right now is not knowing if the rust is coming from my tank or the tank at the gas station. my tank is aluminum so a magnet would have not affect.

not rust from filter. it is not old enough for that.

Re: particles in fuel water seperator

so the whole story. tank is original one in an 89 albemarle. 120 gallon aluminum. yes i know where this is going...

fuel had been fairly low for a few weeks. put 80-90 gallons in on 4/26. took an offshore trip 4/27. boat ran like a top all day. never hesitated one bit. got all the way back, 100 yards from ramp, pulled boat back into neutral, and within 30 seconds she sounded like death.

eventually did quit. all we could do to make it last 100 yards. got home, dumped out filter, and you see what we got. there was definitely a water issue. the rust was unexpected.

the boat is sitting now. this sat i plan on pumping fuel from bottom to see if there is still a water issue. the other problem is identifying source of rust and how to remove the remaining from tank.

polishing will cost $350-$450

Polishing will cost less than $30 if you have to buy everything new, and do it yourself.
Fuel Pump, $20. Filter $4. Hoses $5. Doing it yourself, Priceless. :joyous:

But how old is the filter? Is it possible it's left over from the old lines.

How old is it? I had a spin off filter cartridge that was only one year old and it was developing rust inside it.

filter was maybe a month old or so. how fast would they rust? i doubt it would rust that bad, that fast. it was not the kind with the clear bowl on the bottom.

care to PM me some details or point me to a website?

basically the polishing i was talking about, someone comes in with a big pump and filtration system. they agitate/recirculate your fuel to stir up debris so that it can be sucked out. some also have cleaners to remove varnish, bacteria and buildup.
