So my old flat bottom 16 ft tracker sportsman has a 1976 35 hp on it. Thinking about buying a new 30 hp merc. Thing is new merc weighs abot 175lb with the trim assist and is a beast in comparission to my old 76 evinrude . I dont know the weight difference. Im bout 230 plus the merc just wanting some input. Dont how its gonna ride with extra weight. Maybe i should go down tothe 20 hp merc its only 115lb??? Any suguestions? Boat is rated for 35hp but that was in 94 these new 4 strokes weigh a lot more than the 2 strokes from 94?????

There were 4-stroke outboards in production when your boat was built, so I'd guess that its horsepower rating is NOT dependent on the motor being a 2-stroke. If the weight difference concerned me, I'd put 50 lbs of ballast in the stern and see how it rides.

I figure a 94 4 stroke 35 would be about 150 lbs.Tried to find a 94 4 stroke
apparently no one made a 35 in 94.
So it appears your working with about a 30 lb. difference depending on the model.
I wonder if the 30 Merc is made by Merc or is a rebadged motor
and where is it assembled?
If I was buying new I would be looking at the direct injection 2 strokes
like the Evinrude Etec. Fewer moving parts almost like your 76. 2 stroke.
These meet or exceed CARB requirements. Evinrude has a vast selection
of 25 and 30 hp motors made in the US.
