home made jack plate

hey guys, im looking to build a jackplate for my 1998 johnson 35 hp cylinder and 1648 alumacraft. looking for just a simple design using two pieces of aluminum angle for each side. my question is basically will 1/4" be sufficient, or should i step up to 3/8"? this is basically just to raise the motor about 3" from what i can get with the mounting holes.
