I have had a 1961 Runabout 14' boat with a 40 hp Elgin motor with its original trailer stored in my barn for over 20 years. A friend saw it the other day and wants to buy it as a project. I have no idea what this boat might be worth. I don't want to ask too much but I don't want to short myself either. Anyone have an idea?

A couple summers back I sold a 1967 14' traveller boat with a 1967 chrysler 45 hp motor, on a trailer for $300. Boat was in OK condition, motor was running good & useable as-is. (I had used it regularly) Trailer needed work. I'd say $200-300 max for yours. Since it's been sitting for so long, I'd say it definitely is a project, not a boat that you could use as is. "project boats" are easy to find because the work and $$ to restore them is more than they are worth.

Unless it is a wood boat, then I would say not much. After 20 years, it'll take some $$$ to get the boat, engine and trailer back into a usable state.

How good of a friend? Have the friend get the boat and give you some cash, deal is done. You'll get rides in the boat when he gets it up and running.

Agreed - it's gonna' be tough make that boat an attractive "sale."

Does it look something like this 1961 Sears boat package? 433px-Elginb61002.jpg

If so, it could be worth a fair amount to some collector when "restored".

I think those Elgin motors were made be Scott At Water?
