Calibrating Ritchie compass for declination? Compensators?

Has anyone had much luck calibrating the "compensators" on a Ritchie compass? It doesn't seem like I am getting much adjustment out of the compensator screws in that the dial only slightly moves with full deviation on the screws? The model is the RitchieSport X-10-M, if it makes any difference. It looks like they all have the same mechanism all through their lineup.

Never mind. It helps to hit the right compensator - 90deg off the heading (side screw for N/S, front screw for E/W), not in line with the heading. Now I'm getting a 60deg (+/-30deg from center) swing of the dial out of the screws. That's more like it!
