pickup.jpgpickup.jpgTempo fuel tanks of the 90?s vintage used a pickup assy. Consisting of a barbed aluminum fitting pressed into the tank boss. A nylon tube is pressed onto the lower barb inside the tank. The tube splits, breaks or falls off . The barbed fitting on the outside that the fuel hose attaches to is a check valve. This type fitting will rotate stiffly but will not unscrew. The factory considers this fitting to be non removable and doing so will likely damage the tank as the amount of manipulation necessary to dislodge it frequently breaks the boss or tank top area. Replacing the tank (usually) is not an option so we have devised a method to remove it.
A tool will need to be fabricated to grab the fitting and by holding the boss at its base pull straight up with enough force to rip the polyolyphin loose at the barbs. That?s a lot of force. The tool is basically a bearing puller design and can be made from some common plumbing fittings and a little welding. The base is a wooden block drilled a little over ?? to fit snugly around the boss and distribute the counter force at the base. Once removed we simply install a 3/8? copper tube. A ?? id fuel hose is placed over the boss and clamped to it. Place a small section of hose over the tubing to fit inside the ?? hose and a clamp to tighten it all up. A check valve and appropriate fittings for the fuel line and the tank is fixed. Just make sure the check valve is not a spring type and the suction force is no more than the original. The original may be reused but we don?t like aluminum fittings and won?t put them with other metals.
