are there any advantages over a horizontal vs a vertical windlass ? I am ready to purchase, have a older (83-34 silverton flybridge) boat.
have rom in anchor locker for both, just not sure what type to buy. thanks for help

In general, a vertical windlass looks a lot nicer as little of it protrudes above the deck, but it's harder to install. Most of it sits below the foredeck and you'll need a big holesaw to cut through the deck so the gypsy can protrude. A horizontal windlass is easier to install, but looks just like a winch sitting up there. Functionally, the two types are identical.

Don't you have a lid on your anchor locker?? I don't think anything but a vertical windlass will work because the lid has to close
