what is sae j1171

hi everyone ,just topping up the two reservois on my mercury 4.3 v6 on my 220 thundercraft , the one says to use auto trans fluid , the other one says to use sae j1171 , anybody know what fluid that is ? thanks ...

J1171 is not a fluid, nor a standard for oil, it's a standard for marine electrical items. http://standards.sae.org/j1171_200406/

What reservoirs are you talking about? If you don't know what they are called, post a picture. Over the years, there have been many different reservoirs, styles, and fluids in them.
Basically, Mercruiser doesn't recommend ATF in anything, so pictures are recommended.

Yes, it is that label you should see on your starter and alternator . . .;)

SAE stands for Society of Automtive Engineers. Basically it's a society of engineers that is a stamp of approval.

Yes, the Bennett trim tab pumps use ATF.

The J1171 sticker just shows that the motor and solenoids meet the SAE spec for the unit to be in the engine compartment.
