What size motor will go on a Valco 14'?

Hi all,

Just purchased a fishing boat. I was tired of pulling my cuddy cabin just to catch a few trout. The boat is a 1979 Valco 14' all welded.

There is no motor sticker and it currently has a 1976 Honda 7.5 4 stroke. What is the largest size or weight motor that it can handle?

How is the reliability of these boats/is it a good brand? Any opinions?

I don't know if we are talking the same boat, but I had a 1960 14' Valco aluminum boat. It was rated for 25 HP max.

A 15HP would probably be pretty much ideal.

Get what you want. Have had 5 1/2 plane out friends john boat and have had other friends with a 33 Johnson on a 14' Alumacraft (1960's vintage). I had a 30 Merc Mark 30 on a 14' wide, high sided Mirror Craft semi-V which, with a side console was a perfect small fishing boat once I added a trolling motor.
