Are all bimini tops made to where you have to drill through your gelcoat or do they make like a portable one?

I had a Ranger with a nice gell coat and they screwed directly into the gel coat. I think you need to start with a drill that is larger than the thread diameter to drill through the gel coat. Then reduce the drill bit size to the shank diameter of the threaded part and drill the remaining depth. Hopefully your boat's gunwale is built up to support such things.
Mistake I made on my first bimini is that I had it custom made with SS bows. SS it too heavy and alum tubing works just fine and is much lighter.
