Hi guys,

I'm installing a windlass on my boat and need to cover the anchor hatch my 21' Striper came with in order to mount the windlass there. My options are wood or an aluminum plate. I would like to do it with wood but I don't know what I can use aside from teak. BTW, the size of the plate I need to build is 12"x16"x2".

Any advice will be appreciated.

Why not use starboard? Wont rot or warp and comes in thicknesses up to 3/4"

You could use mahogony but it would require more maintenance than teak. I think teak would be your best bet as far as wood, it has a lot of natural oils and silica which make it resistant to moisture. Also teak prices these days are extremely high; you could probably get an aluminum plate for less than the teak. I also am a believer that wood doesn't belong on a boat there are enough maintenance items on a boat already.

I think I'm going to have to go with Aluminum. I can't find teak on the size I need and the maintenance free setup is just more convenient.

Thanks.
