Removing bottom paint

The previous owner of our boat used to keep it berthed at a marina all season. He had anti-fouling/ bottom paint (is this the correct name) put on while sitting on the trailer. Spots were missed and it looks crappy, besides the fact the colors don't match. We will be trailering the boat so I see no need for the bottom paint. I'd like to remove it. Is there any special procedure to remove it? Or do I just start sanding? Or ?????

Re: Removing bottom paint

It's not that easy.
If the anti-fouling paint was originally applied correctly, the hull gelcoat was sanded to remove mold-release wax and give the paint some grip. Best way to remove it without further damage is soda blasting.
Removing the bottom paint completely will require an epoxy barrier coat to be applied. For more info go to the Interlux website and start reading.

consider painting over it instead. Less risk to the gel coat and cheaper.

thanks for the info. sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth to do.
