Bayliner camper top

I have a 1991 Capri 1850 with a merc 3.0 I/O. I have the original camper top, but it has not been used in many years, so I'm told. I am missing the camper top hardware. I know that it is a 2 bow frame, but I can't get accurate measurements to replace it because the top has shrunk so much. The original mounting hardware is still in place on the boat, thankfully.

Does anyone here have a Capri 1850 I/O that has this hardware that can give me the measurements? I've already talked to Bayliner and they have no records for that info and the few canvas shops I talked to won't tell me becuse they want the entire job of replacing the top.

I live near Lake Erie and do a lot of fishing and really like the original camper top design in case of foul weather. But I can only afford to replace the canvas in sections as money becomes available, so I'd like to just get this hardware and use the old top the best I can until a new top can be bought.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ayuh,... Buy a set of bows,+ build it to where you Want it....
It ain't like you've gotta match the existing top or nothin'....

Btw,... Every Camper top I've ever seen isn't very fisherman friendly....
They go toooo far back,+ you'll be jambing your rod into it fightin' fish...

Re: Bayliner camper top

I have a Capri 1950, but the camper top is inside the rear hatch, and I won't
be taking the cover for at least a couple weeks yet.

I agree with Bond-O, though, about the space restrictions of the camper top.
I am going to buy a regular bimini, about 36" high, to use for normal use.

The camper top works fine for camping, but it restricts vision to through the
windshield, and if you are in rainy foul weather, you'll want to see above the
windshield level. Ain't no windshield wipers.

I once saw a specialty cover maker advertising a camper top nobody bought,
so maybe you can find one if you search and search. Maybe not, and it will
be costly, anyway.

Good luck!

I have found the hardware for my original camper canvas on ebay a few times, but never bought it. I dont experience enough foul weather to use it, so I stuck with my aftermarket bimini. I kept all the canvas though so I can include it if/when I ever sell the boat. so check ebay from time to time, the stuff for mine is exclusive to bayliner only .

Re: Bayliner camper top

My main reason for the stock camper top is for foul weather. I'm on Lake Erie for fishing and storms brew up quickly. Because of the size of the lake and it's shallow depth, it can get rough in the blink of an eye. I was lucky last year and had good weather each time out. The only time I would use the cover is when a storm brews up and I'm headed for shore. A bimini won't help keep rain out of the boat or help me see when driving. The camper also works out better due to it's design. It has a more aerodynamic fit which helps when you're headed into the wind. A wiper will be a quick & easy instal for me.

If I can get the hardware, my old top can be used until I get a new one. I have a friend who has the ability and equipment to make a new one, but doesn't do it for a living.

Re: Bayliner camper top

I went to Bayliner website and it appears that Westland Canvas makes the canvas parts for Bayliner, maybe you could contact them and get the parts you need. Just a thought

http://www.westlandcovers.com/

The Bayliner site has an online parts cataloge also, and it shows your year model part numbers at least.

Is this shape you are after Newport?
I'm fortunate to still have my original frame and canvas for my '90 which I'm pretty sure is the same boat as the '91.

That is definitely it!!!!! Any chance you could tell me the dimensions? The height and width of each bow should be all I would need, and maybe the length of the small rear struts. I'm even willing to compensate you for your time. Thank you so much! Nice looking boat by BTW.

Thanks for the help. The folks at Bayliner are very helpful on the phone, but couldn't find this info for me. I'll check these sites this evening. Thanks again!

The boat is wrapped up at the moment for winter storage but I'll see if I can in there over the next week and take a few dimensions...weather dependent.

Re: Bayliner camper top

Ok, guys, here is the Bayliner camper top you are after!
I mean, here is a pic and some measurements of it.

The overall width is 69", from the center of the hardware holes.
From the ground to the top of each side mount is 16".
Each of the auxiliary side mount extensions is 18.5", not including hardware.
The zipper slit is the front of the cover that attaches to the windshield.

If you already have the canvas part, and assuming you have the skills and
equipment to fabricate the pieces, you will also have to customize on the
hardware mounts. Some visualization is also required, but you probably
have that, too. Maybe some hardware pieces available on the internet...

This camper top is fine when cruising for ultimate protection from the wind
and weather elements, and it provides some degree of privacy. And if you
have the rear side add-ons, you have an enclosed camper top for camping.

:)

Good luck!
