rotary steering helm question (installation of cable)

I just ordered a teleflex steering cable for my boat. When disconnecting the old cable from the helm, i found a POSSIBLE problem. after loosening the bolt (the one that connects the cable sheath to the helm) and turning my steering wheel so the cable would slide out all they way, i was able to simply pull the actual cable from the helm by hand. Now ive heard of a pin that is supposed to lock the cable into the helm. my question is, if i was able to simply pull the cable out with ease, was there something loose? When installing the new cable, do i just simply feed the cable into the helm and reel it in or is it supposed to lock with a pin or something?
Boat Specs:
Evinrude 48 SPL
16 ft. 1972 yazoo
Single cable rotary system.

Thanks in advance and safe boating to all!

Re: rotary steering helm question (installation of cable)

the new cable should come with an adapter, you have the old style, that the nut held the cable. you mount the adapter to the helm, and then the cable.
