They were built in Peterborough, Ontario, by the Peterborough Boat Works, at least in earlier years. Never heard anything about Alcan being involved, though. Latest ones I've ever seen were 91's or '92's.
hello guys. I have owned 2 peterborough boats<br />and currently still have one. yes they are made by Alcan and were manufactured in Quebec.<br />BUT YOU ARE ENTITLED TO BELIVE WHAT YOU WILL.<br />PS. not Alcan aluminum smelting!!. Alcan boat <br />builders
Oh joy, I can believe what I want to. I'm sure that the government is working on plugging that little loophole as I write. <br /><br />The only Alcan's that I've ever seen were all houseboats, all from the 1970's and all, yes, aluminum hulls.<br />Do you have any more information on the Alcan - Peterborough connection?
Hi Pits, the line between humour and sarcasm is obviously a fine one. If you go back and read my post you will hopefully see I was trying to be helpful and that I did give you accurate information -- I see Peterborough boats here and I know they are from Ontario and assumed they were built in peterborough because of the name. My neighbour has one and he towed it all the way from Toronto! No offence was intended. You asked for free advice and you got it (and it was accurate to boot!).
pitsboat<br />my peterborough , 1982 model ambassador has a manufactures plate on the transom <br />reads BUILDER / CONSTRUCTEUR: PROD ALCAN<br /> MODEL: AMBASSADOR # 255334 <br />do you know what year your boat is ?<br />is it an inboard or out board, open bow or closed ?<br />there are many of them still in service around here. not a bad boat never gave me any problems.<br />they still made them in the early 90's<br />they were never made in peterborough Ontario.<br />strang they called them peterborough though ?
Why it is called a Peterborough boat?<br />Here is an article that tells where the name came from.Go directly to paragraph 7 that starts with "Peterborough" for the answer.<br /><br /> http://www.powerboating.com/pbc17-4/waterfront17-4.html
For anyone still interested in this 12 year old topic, I just bought a 1982 16ft Peterborough and it is made by Alcan Marine Products of Princeville, Quebec.
I did a little looking around and it looks like there was a Peterborough Canoe Company that was in Peterborough. The Peterborough Canoe Company went out of business in 1961 and made wooden boats (according to Wikipedia and http://www.trentsevernantiqueboats.com/ptbo.htm ). I thought this was strange as I have a 1976 Peterborough fiberglass bow rider, so a little further investigation was on order.
So after looking further I found this (http://www.princecraft.com/ca/en/About-Princecraft/History.aspx ) Princecraft bought Alcan and produced Peterborough boats. Looks like all were right, it just depends on when the boats was made.
Since this topic is 12 years old, we need to let it drift back into the archives by not posting to it........ Any topic over 90 days is considered old....
