How much could my boat weigh?

Hello all! I will (hopefully!) be a new owner of an old (1985) fibreglass 16.5' Peterborough bowrider with a Mercruiser 3 litre with an alpha 1 (I think) outdrive. The present owner has told me that the manual for the boat says the boat weighs 1250lbs. Does this sound right? Many of the other boats that I have looked at are listed as much heavier. More in the 1600-1800lbs range. Were Peterborough boats built that much lighter? Thanks for any insight any of you may have.

It could have weighed 1250# when it was new. Some outboards that size weighed 800-900. That weight would not include any accessories, fluids or batteries.
It might weigh more now.

Thanks for the post. So you think the 1250lbs is WITHOUT engine and outdrive then. Why would a manufacturer put in a weight with out motor in a boat designed for an I/O? Seems odd.

Thanks for the response.

I/O boats weight is published with weight of motor. Just not gas.

Look up specks yourself, then get boat weighed

Some manufacturers print the net weight without outboards and some the full wt. including inboard. 1250 would be the wt. without an outboard or fuel for that 17' Peterbourough. I am positive of that. We have had a few and sold them in the last few years here in Ontario.

A google search for a 1985 Peterbourough show a 16.3' on trailers rated for 800kg. so yes, your boat could have weighed 1250 new/dry since the motor and drive package is about 650# that would put the hull at 600#

the specs on i-boats only go to '76 http://boatspecs.iboats.com/Peterborough/bp/20br1344

Bought the boat today. Towed it just over 100kms home. No problem with my VW Golf Wagen TDI. Will post pics tomorrow.

Thanks for all the answers.

No. I am getting rid of the vw next year. Most likely get a six cylinder suv. There are some models out there that can pull 3500#. I know my vw is at its extreme limit with this boat. Most likely over!

For sure over, get yourself a 4runner or something capable.

Looks like a sharp I/O boat - congrats on the purchase.

I tow with a current 4Runner and I'll be happy to answer any questions as there are a couple annoyances I have with design decisions.

Thanks Brian! I have been looking at the Hyundai Santa Fe 3.3l AWD. My wife and I have had three Hyundai cars. They have never caused us any problems. Well, except that Pony we had many, many years ago that tried to kill me with carbon monoxide poisoning! But that was a different time...

Not great at your American and perhaps imperial measurement...but I know that my 18ft bow rider with a V8 weighs around 3000lbs dry...if it helps any.
I think this is around 1300kg in my money ?
