Purchased a Florida owned 1995 24ft Maxum Cuddy about a month ago. One side of boat was flawless, the other (the on-lift sun side) was horribly faded.
Owner had told me he put Penetrol on the hull to give it a high gloss finish. Well...the one side does look good but apparantly penetrol sucks in the sun.
See photos.
anyway, I have been tediously scraping the penetrol off the hull and using 3M compound afterwards to get the heavily faded gelcoat cleaned up.
As you can guess, firstly its tedious, and secondly, no matter how careful I am, I'm putting scratches in the gelcoat... which as you can imagine is not what I had in mind.
IS there a better way.
can I use a heat gun? chemical? or am I in for a hull overhaul? perhaps a wrap...
I am lucky in that I can head down to the dock each morning and work on it.
thanks.
