Hey everyone, just want to first say thanks to this site as there's a lot of info that seems to be nowhere else regarding boats, I was able to use a lot of threads and info to determine my purchase, I finally pulled the Trigger though I bought my first boat, when I went to see this boat is was in great shape and well looked after by the owner so I just had to.

It's a 1980's 15ft Sunray (owner said it's an 80, not 100% sure as the motor is a tad newer), the plaque says it's a "Catalina" model which seems to have almost no info out there, the motor according to the tag on it is a 1984 Johnson 70 Sea Horse, which recently had some maintenance done and coils replaced. I cannot start the motor yet as it's currently -13C (feels like -19C) in Ontario, so we don't want to cause any issues at this moment with freezing/expanding water.

I found a brochure for 1984 Sunray boats and on the description was the Catalina model listed, however they don't show any pictures, only the cover of the brochure. The closest information I could find that come close to the description was before 1980s was for a 78 Sunray (Canada) SV-150, also for after 1980s was the Sunray (California) TR-25 for 1981 and the TRII-15 for 83 which were very similar in size and weight but none mentions "Catalina" in the model description.

Basically wanted to determine the total weight of boat and trailer, I'm currently estimating at round 2100-2300lbs, will be pulling it with a 2008 RAV4 V6 so it should be well within the 3500lb capacity of the vehicle.

Here's some pics I took, hoping to pick it up in the next week or so.

I agree, You're likely at 2k pounds or less. I towed a similar boat with an even less capable vehicle so you should be fine.

I tow a similar boat with a V6 SUV as well, tows just fine even loaded down to go camping with a full car load. You should have no issues towing it, though I will say to add a spare tire carrier on that trailer as I don't see one.

If you look at the Serial number on the hull (HIN) the last two digits will tell you the year, you can even determine the month the boat was manufactured.

What part of Ontario you from?

last two digits on the picture I took say 68  can't be a 68, lol... maybe I took a picture of the wrong plate, this one was inside by the steering wheel.

it does say 595kg so that's what, boat weight minus motor?

I'm from the Durham/Clarington area. :)

On the right side of the stern, outside the boat, the HIN will be stamped into the hull. The last 2 numbers will be the year of manufacture.

That weight "could" be capacity for the bare boat minus motor, fuel, stuff etc.

Good ratio of weight between boat/trailer and car...I'm hoping to pull an 18ft I/O Bowrider 3.0 which ways 3,000 with trailer, in my 2015 Santa Fe 2.0T rated at 3,500lbs! Did you purposely buy something that size to stay within the often recommended vehicle tow limit of 1,000lbs under max tow rating?

not necessarily no, just this one came up and I liked it... the truck pulled it pretty good actually and felt like it could pull more.

Sounds like it's an 85, thanks for the info... he kept telling me it's an 80, and it explains why the motor is an 84. 17430575_10155057836695350_1457341190_o.jpg

got the boat home... the Rav4 did great and the load proved to be really easy to handle.

Congratulations! That 70HP is a good outboard. Those were the three cylinder motors that well cared for were absolute gems.

Thanks guys, definitely a decent runabout starter package for a first boat, hopefully I can get a few years out of it... planning on fishing and possibly tubing.

Good looking set up.

23E...Your boat was originally licensed in Lindsay, ON

Thanks for the info, I always wondered how the numbers worked, if they were just random like a car plate or not.

That is a beauty and looks to be in great condition. You have a classic boat there. We picked up a similar Sunray to restore and actually I power washed it today. It doesn't have the bow rails you have but very similar model, size and year. It also has a 70 Johnson on her. Nice looking boat, she will turn heads at the ramp for sure, enjoy and be safe.

That's great to know, she's definitely in decent shape, I have to get it in the garage now and away from the elements, the trailer is a foot too long so I'll have to get the bar modified to fold away

Gotta love it - seems that there will always be something more to spend money on, no matter how great the deal is with a "new-to-you" used boat!

For me, mine will never see another day indoors after I get it. Hope that's not a bad thing. Will not be left in the water, but will sit outside on a trailer covered with boat cover all summer when not in use, then will be shrink wrapped each winter and left outdoors. But apparently that's normal?

Some guys seem to prefer outside shrinkwrapped storage because it prevents from dust and rodents?

What have you heard?
