I just bought a boat for the motor. I now need to remove the motor and throttle cables. (1980 50HP 4 Cy. Mercury) Do I take the cables off inside the motor or do I take the cables out of the throttle assy? I assume it would be the the motor side. Any sites or help on how I do this? Thanks for any help and advice.

Unless you feel like making extra work or are replacing the cable, remove the cables on the motor.

I'm not having any luck finding a photo of the cable attachment inside the motor cowl.

The throttle cable comes off the motor side first. usually there is a nut that needs to be removed. The cable clamps should either unhook(old style) or flip open (newer style). Pull the cable barrel nut out of the clamp.

Next is the shift cable. Loosen the nut and push the "peanut" shaped clamp aside and the cable end will pop up. Wiggle that one up and out of the clamp.
