I just got a nice 1979 18 ' Starcraft Questar that I need to get the weight. I don't want to overload the van. Also the trailer weight. My total capacity is 8500 lbs for the vehicle.

The best way to know that is to pull into a scale and get weighed.

According to NADA, the boat weight is 1600# for I/O and outboard, so the number is suspect. Still with a trailer, you are no where close to 4 tons. Hook it up and get it weighed.

If your van is rated at 8500lbs the van probably won't even know it's back there

What van? And is the 8500# the GVRW for the van or is that the vans towing capacity. Big difference.

The 8500 lbs refers to the mini vans,2004 Ford Freestar 4.2 liter, GCWR. The way I unstand it thats the all in weight including people, cargo, trailer ect

Ok that's different and yes #8500 is everything. The specs say #4250curb weight and #3500 tow rating for a freestar.

The trailer life database shows the freestar at a 2,000lbs limit for towing. Seems low but that is what it says.

I found the 3500lb rating on Google and a couple other sites like cars.com and edmunds.com But your right thumpar after digging a bit I did find a few sites that stated 2000lb rating. It shows a 3.9l v6 and a 4.2l v6 with both ratings the same 2000lb for both or 3500lb for both. So maybe it depends on a factory tow package. I think it's best the OP check the sticker on the door jamb or owners manual to find out. Good catch that's a big difference !
