I'm trying r find out the fuel tank capacity on my newly aquire 1990 seaswirl open bow, 5.0 ho. I was told it's a 30 gall. But I fill up before a day on the river, and after about 8 galls or so, it starts acting like it's running out of fuel, then it stops running all together

Does it start running again if you fill it up more? It's definitely more than 8 gallons in there if it's the original gas tank and I can't see someone replacing a 30 gallon gas tank with a 8 gallon on a 5.0 engine.

It did last time it happened, but I'm not gunna put fuel in until I pull the gauge sender unit off the top and see how much is in there! Either way I have a problem....too small fuel tank, or fuel pickup issues, it sounds like the fuel tank will have to come out to clean!

It still has half a tank, so I pulled the external fuel filter off, which is filthy, and cranked it to see if it's getting fuel, and nothing

Make sure the fuel tank vent is clear. Just so you know, my '98 Seaswirl 2100 Dual Console (150 HP outboard) has a 63 gal tank.

Could it be a fuel pump? Maybe be it is over heating, baring issue?

You could take a look at the anti siphon valve on the tank or try cracking your gas cap when it acts up as Chris said maybe your vent is clogged, cracking your gas cap would let air in.

The fuel pickup tube may have small holes in it making it suck air when it gets to a certain point.
