I want a new rod in the $100 range that will mostly be for Striper but some blues too. I was looking at the Star Aerial. Also, whats a good reel in the $100-$150 range? Also not sure if I should go spinner or conv. Any thoughts?

That is a very open question. Depends so much on what kind of fishing you plan on doing? Is this mostly boat fishing? If so, then a St croix 7' MH with an Okuma Cortez reel will do you nicely and cost you about $250 total.

If you plan on doing beach, jetty, pier fishing frequently, then you probably should go for something longer either 7'6 or 8' and a spinning reel would be a good idea as well. Much easier casting.

Re: (versatile) Striper rod

As noted above, the question is too open

I fish striper with everything from a 6' -#10-17, med. hvy. Black with a 360 Penn Slammer to #30 IGFA trolling rods with Penn 330GTi to 11'-6" Rainshadow blanks and 12'-3" Lamiglas blanks with Abu Garcia conventional reels. Cost ranges from $250 to $800 per combo
