Broken Motor Mount

Mr. Reeves: Thanks for the reply, though I believe your comments have to do with a Johnson or Evinrude motor, and mine is a Yamaha. In any case, kindly excuse the delay in writing back. Yes, my motor turns left and right easily by hand. What my mechanic described to me is a corroded and broken rudder--though he did not use that word. I've looked at the situation and I see that the part from the hydraulic steering "jack" (I believe is the word) that attaches normally, through the use of a small upright bolt--hex-headed, if I recall correctly--and a 2-inch diameter washer, is no longer attached and therefore can not turn the motor right or left.
I hope this information is useful. Again, my question is: do I have to go through the labor-intensive and expensive procedure he mentioned of finding and replacing the mid section of the motor--the section under the powerhead and above the foot? Many thanks for taking the time to advise me!
