I have a 1994 Yamaha 4-stroke 9.9 (kicker motor on my Crestliner). It runs like a dream. Never had any major issues with it. The last few times out it was sort of hard to get into reverse. Yesterday coming back to the dock it would not go into reverse. I disconnected the control cables. The cables (not connected to anything) are kind of hard to operate, but they do move. Using the lever on the side of the motor, it will not move into reverse. Doesn't seem to be anything obstructing the linkage, just won't budge. I am not overly familiar with outboards, but I know a little.
First question is, how do I make the control cables operate more smoothly? Is there a way to lubricate them, or is the reason they are hard to operate due to something inside the controls box?
Second, is there a quick way to determine why the motor won't go into reverse?
Thank you.
