Using Ignition leads from a car

Does it matter if I use ignition leads from a car on my outboard is their any difference.

Answer to your question is yes and no. If the car ignition wires are wire core, I can see it working okay. However if they are resistive core wires, I wouldn't use them. But if you are going to buy wires, why not just buy the proper type wires for your OB engine and no worries at all then... JMHO

I think boat ignition leads are tinned wire, and i'm sure auto wires arent.

Tinned wires are intended to keep corrosion at bay.

Use the correct wires

The OEM plug wires for the antique OB in my sig were marked Packard 440. It's wire core and has been used in cars for eons, I found Packard 440 in bulk at O'Reilly for 69 cents/foot. Now I don't have an eerie glow from under the cowling and she runs a heck of a lot better. :smile:

A lot of outboard motors have wires that are not changeable. have to change the coils to change the wires.
So it might be a good idea to identify what motor you are talking about changing wires on.

Duh, when I read ignition leads, I thought: wires from the key back, not under the hood/cowl wiring.
