Yamaha 200 HPDI external fuel pump?

I have a 1989 Pursuit 2800 which was repowered with twin 2004 Yamaha 200 HPDI's prior to my purchase.

I notice that the fuel line for each engine goes through what looks like an external pump mounted in the back of the bilge area on the inside of the transom .

So I guess my questions are;

Do the 200 HPDI's require an external fuel pump?
Is it possible the pumps are legacy from previous engines and now fuel just flows through the old pump but the pump is not doing the pumping?

Trying to get a handle on what exactly this thing is.

Any all insights welcome.

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha 200 HPDI external fuel pump?

It is not normal to have an electric fuel pump installed. However, it is possible.

Are you sure that these are pumps that you are seeing? Two other things come to mind.

One, boat mounted fuel filters. There may be a pair of wires coming from the bottom of each of them, which is for water in fuel sensing.

Two, senders for Yamaha or another manufacturer's fuel management systems. These will have three wires connected to each sensor.

Now if indeed your boat has electric fuel pumps mounted in the boat only the installer/previous owner will know the reason for such installation.

Hi Boscoe99,
Thanks for the response. They are not fuel filters or fuel water separators. They are between the gas squeeze bulb and the engines.
They do have 3 wires.

I can't tell what that is.

I thought you said it had three wires. I see only two.

I did a Google search of every possible key word "outboard dual electric fuel primer pump" and if you look at images you see one of these , OMC part 174651. oil injection primer pump?

That is the old fuel primer for the OMC Seadrives. It took the place of a primer bulb. Get it out of the system and throw it as far as you can.
