I understand this might be an insanely simple or ridiculous question, but does this motor charge my batteries?

Does you motor use a battery to start it?

Most motors that require batteries to start and operate generally provide a charging system to replenish the battery.

Lets put it this way.
It was designed to charge the battery,
but we have no idea if yours is functioning properly and charging your battery

WBoscoe99 - Yep, the motor does require a battery to start.

99yam40 - You're getting to part 2 of my question :) I believe that whatever charging mechanism might supposed to be in place is not functioning properly.

I guess I'll start googling for a wiring diagram or something to see if I can learn more about what is supposed to be happening and what might actually be happening.

A service manual for your motor is what you need to get the specs and how to test.
I do not know about Suzukis, but Yamahas have what they call lighting coils that create AC voltage that needs to be measured with peak reading voltmeter or a Regular meter with a DVA adapter.
The voltage runs through a rectifier/ regulator to control the battery charging
